Masking caps are designed to cover external features — such as bolts, studs, pipe ends, and rods. They fit over the outside of a part. Masking plugs are inserted into holes — including threaded holes, through-holes, and ports. Choose masking caps for external protection and masking plugs for internal hole protection. Both are available in high-temp silicone for powder coating applications.

How do I choose the right masking plug size for my application?

To choose the right silicone plug for powder coating, follow these steps:

  1. Measure the hole or threa — Use calipers to measure the inner diameter of the hole or thread size (e.g., M6, M8, M10)
  2. Identify the hole type — Internal threads? Through-hole? Blind hole? Tapered hole?
  3. Match to our plug types:

   Masking caps → for bolts, studs, pipe ends

   Tapered plugs → for tapered holes, multiple hole sizes

   Pull plugs → for through-holes and blind holes

   Thread plugs → for internal threads (M2–M20)

Why do I see burrs or rough edges on the paint after removing masking plugs?

Paint burrs after removing masking plugs are usually caused by one of three things:

  1. Overspray buildup — Paint particles bounce back and build up around the plug edge during spraying. Solution: adjust spray angle to 45°–90° and avoid spraying directly at the plug.
  2. Plug removed too early — Paint film tears if removed before full curing. Solution: wait until the coating is completely cured before removing.
  3. Coating too thick — Heavy passes create thick film buildup around the plug. Solution: apply lighter passes near masked areas.
